There are many decisions to take into account when looking to create an animated piece of marketing content. What storyline are looking to follow? How do you want certain information to be presented? One of the biggest decisions you could possibly make is whether to use 2D or 3D animation.

It’s a battle of the dimensions, and we’re here to present their cases.

What’s the difference?

2D animation is known to many as the traditional form of animation. The use of 2D animation actually dates back to the 1800s. This sees an animation storyline presented in a 2-dimensional environment, which essentially means that they can only move up, down, left, or right. TV cartoons are a typical form of 2D animation.

Traditional 2D animation was previously hand drawn and transferred to clear sheets called ‘cels’, these were then layered over one another to create character movement. Many of the classic Disney films that we know and love were created using this method. Nowadays, most 2D animation is created on highly sophisticated computer software.

3D technology began to rise to prominence in the late 1990s, particularly in the film industry but has now got a solid footing in many aspects of graphics, design and production. Both video formats come with their own advantages and disadvantages, so here are some vital questions to ask to help you decide which is best to suit your business needs.

What is the aim of the content?

Creative displays of information through animation can be extremely engaging, particularly if you are looking to convey statistics. A lot of complex information can be packed in, because there are limitless ways in which you can display the information on the screen.
A live-action video, on the other hand, gives a more human touch through the use of actors and physical landmarks or scenery. This will help to encourage emotional engagement among audiences, particularly for content that calls for action.

In terms of speed, usually filming will be the best route, and it largely depends “what happens on the day” – of course careful planning removes the risk that the video won’t deliver. Animation is a more considered approach that means whilst slower, every frame can be deliberated and pondered as it is made.
If you need a human touch, perhaps you want to feature the people who make up your business, or show off something visual like a product or a space – film it, and it you have a lot of complex information that would generally sit on a PowerPoint, an animated explainer video will be best.

Former Saatchi boss, Kevin Roberts, revealed his leadership maxim last week.  It is: Fail Fast, Fix Fast, Learn Fast.  With hindsight, it seems eerily prescient. After telling an interviewer that women in advertising lack male ambition, he faced suspension.  Finally falling on his sword, he said ‘goodbye’ to vertical ambition and ‘hello’ to horizontal gardening leave.  Hopefully, he will have plenty of time to learn some hard lessons – fast or slow – whilst tending the dahlias.
